BREAKING BARRIERS FASHION EVENT.

She has done this before. In September 2024 she put on a fashion event for people with disabilities at Springs Park in Mzuzu, and at the time she told the Malawi News Agency she hoped that featuring models with disabilities would “challenge stereotypes and stigmas surrounding disability”. One of her models back then, Chancy Chirwa, said people with disabilities were normally left out of events like this and deserved the chance to show their talent and meet others in the industry.
This year the show has moved to one of the city’s bigger venues. Grand Palace Hotel hosted the first Mzuzu Fashion Week, where 39 designs went down the runway, so the hotel has done fashion season nights before. The organizer’s are promising entertainment and inspiration alongside the clothes, and they don’t undersell it either, calling Breaking Barriers a movement to redefine Malawi’s fashion identity rather than just a fashion show.

Who Ruth Chirwa Is
Ruth Chirwa, who also goes by Ruth Upie Chirwa, founded the Upie Collection label. Her designs have won awards and been noticed outside Malawi, and a lot of her work is about giving people with disabilities a place on the runway and a way into the industry, not just a seat in the audience.
